My passion throughout my days of study and years of practice has always been finding the ‘gap’ within the expected norms of the industry, and bridging the space with multidisciplinary work. I couldn’t find the leather I needed for a project - no problem - lets print something custom on a material I had never used before! Im pretty adventurous like that - jump first.
Why not?! It intrigued me and was at that stage (mid 2015) not as mainstream in decoration and with designers as it is today. Leather has always been a material I have gravitated towards in my interior design practice - the patina, texture and depth of colour - bringing a beautiful layering to contemporary interiors.
Having experimented on a smaller scale with custom-printed leather cushions for soft furnishing projects I really wanted to push the scale further and with a background in textile and wallpaper I began to explore the possibility of printing large-scale leather wallpaper drops for an exhibition I had been invited to contribute to. Being comfortable and familiar with specifying finishes and materials within the industry of interior design, the process of designing, sourcing leather and finding a locally based company which could custom print my bespoke designs was an adventure! 'NO Richelle leather does not come in 53cm x 10m drops!? Who would have thought said the girl who grew up on a farm!’ Wow had I lost touch with my red-dirt and wheat field childhood…
Whats the story behind the Wanderers collection?
‘Wanderers’ is inspired by the elusive colours and the endless summers of my childhood, and memories of that time. The passing of time and recording moments of joy underpinned this collection. Initially designed as part of an exhibition ‘Still Life - Extraordinary, Everyday’ the exhibition revealed and explored the extraordinary, everyday of domestic space.
On a scale of burnt toast to hell yeah how excited are you about this?
Hell yeah - bring on the champagne! (and of course absinthe for a sneaky ‘death in the afternoon’) if only I could wear 2 watches at once?! This collaboration is something super special - limited number and re-imagining the space between textile/interior design and accessories - to be able to wear a custom piece of print - crafted by your own hand is super special indeed. It has been a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with Hammered Leatherworks and look forward to future collabs between Victoria and Western Australia.
